Obsidian is one of the most important stones for Root Chakra, or the energy center located near the base of the spine. This dark volcanic glass forms when lava reaches the Earth’s surface and quickly cools before crystals take shape. Its creation embodies the elements of fire, water, and earth, making it an extremely powerful stone.

Today, we see this crystal on the beaches of Hawaii and Iceland, but it has been known since the Prehistoric times. Due to the way it sharply fractures, it was used to make arrowheads, spear points, and other cutting tools. It first took on the name Obsidian, however, about 2,000 years ago when a Roman explorer, Obsius, brought it back from Ethiopia.

This black glass is mainly known for its stabilizing and grounding effects, making it an excellent crystal for organizing scattered energy. It stabilizes your Root Chakra and anchors you securely to the earth.

Physically, Obsidian It is thought to relieve stress, ease tension in the muscles, and improve circulation. It is a detoxification stone and provides support in efforts to rid yourself of dependencies.

Obsidian with Other Stones

To promote deeper healing, I like to combine Obsidian with other Root Chakra stones. Some include Dalmatian Stone, Mookaite Jasper, New Jade (Serpentine), Ruby Zoisite, and Garnet.

Combine other Chakra stones with Obsidian too! When I need to be confident in speaking my truth, I pair it with a Throat Chakra stone. Some examples are Angelite, Blue Agate, Amazonite, or Lapis Lazuli.
